The article was very structured and informative. The article itself was actually a literature review of studies on shift work. It was filled with interesting information on the topic.

  • Why did you choose to review this particular article?

The article is directly related to my research project. I am researching the effects of shift duration on mental acuity. After reading the aim of the article I thought it would be very beneficial to my research and provide me with many references to search.

  • Comment on the readability of this article.

The article was very easy to read. It was very structured and flowed nicely. Each aspect of shift work that was covered in the article had its own section and the information was not scattered around. The article was not too excessive with its use of medical terminology but those not in the medical field might have some difficulty with the terminology.

  • Course Topics covered:

The article itself was a literature review. It provided a great example of how to put together a review. I would recommend that all of the students in the class read the article. It is very structured and flows well like the Baily text explained it should be done. It also provides an example of how to word your literature review so that every sentence doesn’t start with, so and so states that.

  • Brief Summary:

The article was a literature review of studies on shift work. The literature review included studies on the length of shifts and shift rotation. The article addressed issues including the effects of shift work on circadian rhythms, sleep, eating habits, social patterns, and physical and mental health.

  • Identify and attempt to explain three (3) terms, procedures or concepts that were unfamiliar to you when reviewing this article.

1.      It was a great example of how to do a literature review.

2.      I found the section on hormone secretion in response to the 24 hour sequence of day and night very interesting. I was unaware that there were low levels of corticosteroids in the night and higher levels during the day.

3.      I did not know that it is easier to adjust to jet lag when traveling form east to west rather than west to east. Going with the sun is easier to adjust to that going against it.

  • Detail the strengths/weaknesses of this article.

The article was very structured which made it easy to read and easy to focus on. The information flowed form the start of the paper to the finish. The article gave good supporting evidence of the effects of shift work. The article seemed very creditable and referenced 44 other similar articles and text.

The only real weakness to the article was that it does not go into enough detail about the studies that were reviewed. It would have been nice to have known some of the methodology for the studies and some of the variables that were measured.

  • How might this article be useful to you in your further studies and career?

I am currently working as a paramedic and plan on becoming a respiratory therapist. Both of these jobs work on rotating shifts. This article was directly related to my current and future job. The article also provided me with many references that I am going to search for my research project.

  • Does the article include a list of references/citations that can be used to find more information on the topics they cover?

The article listed 44 references with similar information.
