- What is your overall evaluation of this article?

______Fair ______Good _______Very Good
_____Excellent
Overall I really didn’t
like the article. The title was very interesting but the article had little to do with the title. The main focus of the article
was about resident physicians working night shifts. The article only contained an abstract of the study that was done on sleep
deprivation and alcohol intoxication. The title was very misleading.
- Why did you choose to review this particular article?
The title of this article
lead me to believe that it could be directly related to my research on shift duration and mental acuity. At first glace it
seemed like a very captivating and interesting article.
- How would you rate this article as a tool for teaching a student about cardiopulmonary physiology,
radiography, or another allied health specialty?

- Comment on the readability of this article.
The
article was very easy to read. It wasn’t heavy with medical terminology. It was also not that long of an article.
Some
of the topics in the article were directly related to the readings from chapter four. The abstract of the study talked about
the lack of randomization in the experiment. The abstract also listed some of the limitation of the study.
The
article contained an abstract form a study done by Williamson and Feyer. The experiment they carried out was to compare the
effects of sleep deprivation and moderate alcohol intoxication. When the subjects were sleep deprived for 17-19 hours they
performed at the same level or worse than those whose blood alcohol level was 0.05%. The bulk of the article was about resident
physicians having to work late night call. The article addressed many of the dangers of working these types of shifts and
urged that policy be put in place to stop excessive late night call for residents.
- Identify and attempt to explain three (3) terms, procedures or concepts that were
unfamiliar to you when reviewing this article.
1. I found it very interesting
that after 17-19 hours without sleep the subjects test results were equal or worse than of people with a blood alcohol concentration
of 0.05%.
2. I learned that BAC is an abbreviation
for blood alcohol concentration.
3. The article provided me with
a good example of an abstract and gave me a better idea of how to approach this section of my own research project.
- Detail the strengths/weaknesses of this article.
When
I first selected this article I was expecting to read information about a study that compared the effects of sleep deprivation
and alcohol intoxication. I was very disappointed when there was only a small portion of the article devoted to the topic.
It was very misleading and made the rest of the article very boring. It was well written but since it was not what I was expecting
to read it ruined the article for me. The article should have gone into more details about the study. It made me believe that
the author of the article only read the abstract of the study and didn’t research it more.
- How might this article be useful to you in your further studies and career?
The
only thing that I found useful about this article was that it had the actual study in the reference section. I now plan on
accessing and using this study in my own research project.
- Does the article include a list of references/citations that can be
used to find more information on the topics they cover?
The
article contains 10 references that can be used to find similar topics.
